Mind practising exercise

On the 19th of August, Edwin let us tried on an interesting exercise in class. He played a music for approximately 5 minutes and we were required to write/type whatever storyline that came through our mind, no thinking is allowed. Thoughts were to flow naturally from the inside while listening to the music.

And here goes my story:

Aaron wakes up early in the morning, hearing the sound of the railway nearby his house. As usual, he gets ready to work, feeling empty inside. He thought of committing suicide every single day. On his way to the office, he turns his head upward to look at the sky. The sky appears to be dark, maybe due to his mood swings or it could be the weather is really bad on that day itself.
He reaches the bus stop to wait for the bus, only to realise the bus has gone 2 minutes ago. The next bus will only be reaching in another 25 minutes which means he will definitely be late to work. The surrounding is full with sounds of people laughing, people walking and talking among themselves. But what Aaron hears is just the critics from people around him. He feels like his head is going to explode. He feels so suffering that he screams out his lung in the centre of the town. People turn their heads to look at this insane guy but he does not seem to bother and just walks away.
When he is about to cross the road, he totally ignores the car around and almost gets knocked down by cars that are passing by in the busy town centre. His ignorance has caused the messy traffic jam yet again, he does not bother.
Aaron tries to walk to the nearby taxi stand to try his luck to get a taxi, which might possibly costs him 30aud to get to his work place, which is so much more expensive compare to taking a bus, which will only cost 1aud. Anger fills his mind.

The music appeared to be really depressed for me, filled with sad moods and I almost felt like the sky is not longer blue and the flowers will never grow. And therefore, my story revolves around the male character, Aaron whose life is filled with hatred.

Writing a story is never easy, especially for me cause i always thought i have limited ideas and not that creative. I think this exercise is great because it allows the ideas to flow without much thinking. Everything comes naturally from the relaxing piece of mind.

Good practice for me. Looking forward to more practices in weeks to come.

  1. "He thought of committing suicide every single day." You might consider starting your story with this very sentence. You'll certainly grab the reader's attention!! It's a terrible subject (suicide) but we're all fascinated (in a dark way) by it. It's also one of the biggest causes of death in the Western World, but nobody really talks about it. It's tabboo. If you have a character who wants to kill himself, you also have started on a journey about redemption or happiness. Your character probably needs to learn how to care. Not about himself (as suicide is mostly a selfish act) - but he needs to learn how to care about others. He needs to see the beauty in the world. There's a famous book called "The Outsider" by Albert Camus which starts in a similar way. "Maman [mother] died today. Or was it yesterday? I don't know..." Very powerful beginning. Nicely done for someone who "thinks" they don't have an imagination.
